Tinder Passport lets you swipe in another city before you get there. It is great for trips and moves, but it also changes who can see you and where they think you are. We read Tinder’s own help pages to explain how Passport works, what it costs you in privacy, and how to stay safe when you date while traveling.

The short answer: Passport is a paid Tinder feature (sold alone or in Plus, Gold and Platinum) that sets your location to any city you pick. People there see you as local. A VPN alone won’t do the same thing, because Tinder uses your phone’s location, not your internet address.
How Tinder Passport Works
- Open Tinder and tap the profile icon, then Settings.
- If you don’t have it yet, choose Get Tinder Plus, Gold or Platinum, or buy Passport on its own.
- Go to Location and add a new city, or pick one on the map.
- Start swiping. To go home, switch your location back to your current one.
Tinder says that in places where Face Check is required, you must complete it before you can use Passport. Face Check is a video selfie Tinder uses to confirm you are real.
What Passport Changes About Your Privacy
- New people see you. Everyone who swipes in your Passport city can see your profile, photos and bio, which is a much wider audience than your hometown.
- Your city is now a clue. A profile that says you’re “visiting” tells strangers you’ll be in an unfamiliar place, often alone, on certain dates. Keep travel dates and hotel names out of your bio and early chats.
- Check what your profile shows. Before your first date, look at your own profile the way a stranger would, and turn off precise location for apps that don’t need it.
Want more control over where you appear? Hinge lets you type a city or zip code and never updates it on its own, while Bumble follows your GPS. See the full comparison in our Hinge vs Bumble privacy guide.
Can You Use a VPN Instead of Passport?
Not really. A VPN changes your internet address, but Tinder sets your location from your phone’s location services. So a VPN on its own won’t move you to another city on Tinder, and faking GPS can break the app’s rules.
A VPN is still worth having when you travel, for a different reason: hotel, airport and café Wi-Fi is shared with strangers. A VPN encrypts your connection so others on the network can’t snoop on what you send. We compared the two most popular options in NordVPN vs Surfshark, and explain the hotel Wi-Fi risk in our travel router guide.
Dating While Traveling: A Safety Checklist
- Meet in a busy public place, and get there on your own.
- Share your live location and your match’s profile with a friend back home.
- Don’t tell a new match which hotel you’re staying at.
- Keep a personal safety alarm on your keys or bag.
- If something feels off, leave. You don’t owe anyone a second drink.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does Tinder Passport work?
Passport lets you set your Tinder location to another city, so you can see and match with people there before you arrive. Tinder says it is sold on its own and is included in Tinder Plus, Gold and Platinum. You change it under Settings, then Location.
Is Tinder Passport free?
No. Tinder says Passport is a paid feature, sold on its own or as part of a Plus, Gold or Platinum subscription. Prices change by age, location and device, so check the current price in the app.
Can a VPN change my Tinder location?
Not on its own. Tinder sets your location from your phone’s location services, so a VPN that only changes your internet address won’t move you on Tinder. A VPN is still useful for protecting your phone on hotel and airport Wi-Fi.
Do I need Face Check to use Passport?
In some regions, yes. Tinder says people using Passport in places where Face Check is required must complete it first.
Can matches see my real location when I use Passport?
People in your Passport city see you as being in that city. Keep your travel dates, hotel and exact plans out of your profile and early chats, so a stranger can’t work out where you’ll be.
