COSRX Snail Mucin Review (2026): Does Snail Mucin Work? We Checked the Research and 10 Snail Products

Quick answer: COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence is a simple, fragrance-free hydrating essence: 12 ingredients, with snail secretion filtrate listed first. It’s worth it as a gentle moisturizing step, especially for dry or irritated skin. But the anti-aging hype runs ahead of the science: we found only two small randomized trials of snail mucin (25 and 50 people), one funded by the product’s maker, and neither tested COSRX. Of the 10 snail products we checked, 7 list snail mucin first and 8 have no fragrance or essential oils.

Key Findings

  • 7 of 10 snail products we checked list Snail Secretion Filtrate as their first ingredient.
  • 8 of 10 contain no fragrance or essential oils. The exceptions: Some By Mi Snail Truecica (bergamot and sage oils) and COSRX’s snail gel cleanser (fragrance).
  • COSRX’s 96 essence has just 12 ingredients, with no fragrance.
  • The research is thin: 2 small randomized trials, with 25 and 50 people. The larger one was funded by the product’s maker and combined snail mucin with snail egg extract.
  • Not independently verified: COSRX says its snails aren’t harmed during collection, but we found no outside audit.

What Is Snail Mucin?

Snail mucin is the slime snails make to move and protect themselves. Skincare brands collect it, filter it and list it as Snail Secretion Filtrate. Brands market it as hydrating, soothing and repairing. In products like COSRX’s, it makes up most of the formula and gives the essence its slippery, gel-like feel.

The number in a product’s name, like “96” or “92,” is the brand’s stated share of snail secretion filtrate. Other brands state percentages too, such as Neogen (96%) and iUNIK (70%).

Does Snail Mucin Work? What the Research Shows

  • The 2013 split-face trial. A double-blind study of 25 people with moderate to severe sun damage used a snail secretion product on one side of the face and a placebo on the other. After 12 weeks, fine lines around the eyes improved more on the snail side, and it was well tolerated.
  • The 2020 trial. A randomized, vehicle-controlled trial of 50 women aged 45 to 65 tested a regimen combining snail secretion filtrate with a snail egg extract for 3 months. The active group improved more in firmness, elasticity and roughness. But wrinkles improved in both groups with no significant difference, and hydration gains weren’t different either.
  • The catch. The 2020 study was funded by Cantabria Labs, the company behind the tested products, and one author works there. Both trials were small, used other brands’ products, and the authors called for larger studies.

Our read: snail mucin is a reasonable hydrating, soothing ingredient. There’s early evidence it may help sun-damaged skin, but nothing that proves a COSRX essence will reduce wrinkles. If that’s your goal, sunscreen and a retinoid have far stronger evidence.

How Is Snail Mucin Collected? Is It Ethical?

This is one of the most-searched snail mucin questions. According to COSRX’s own FAQ, its R&D team says snails “are placed over a mesh net in a dark and quiet room,” where they move around freely, and that they are not harmed or even stressed during collection.

  • What we could verify: only the company’s description. We found no independent audit or certification of how the snails are kept.
  • Vegan? No. Snail mucin comes from an animal, so it isn’t vegan.
  • If that matters to you, look for plant-based soothing ingredients like centella asiatica or panthenol instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is snail mucin?

Snail mucin is the slime snails produce, filtered for use in skincare. On ingredient labels it appears as Snail Secretion Filtrate. It’s used as a lightweight hydrating ingredient, and COSRX’s best-known essence lists it first.

Does snail mucin actually work?

It’s a good hydrator, and two small randomized trials found improvements in signs of sun-damaged skin. But the trials had only 25 and 50 people, one was funded by the product’s maker and combined snail mucin with snail egg extract, and neither tested COSRX. Treat it as a pleasant moisturizing step, not a proven anti-aging treatment.

Is COSRX Snail Mucin worth it?

For most people, yes, if you want a simple, fragrance-free hydrating essence. The Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence has 12 ingredients, lists snail secretion filtrate first and contains no fragrance. It’s one of the most-reviewed skincare products on the largest US online store, with over 100,000 ratings.

How is COSRX snail mucin collected?

COSRX says its snails are placed over a mesh net in a dark, quiet room, where they move around and leave mucin behind, and that no snails are harmed. That’s the company’s own description; we found no independent audit of the process.

Is snail mucin vegan or cruelty-free?

Snail mucin isn’t vegan, because it comes from an animal. Whether it’s cruelty-free depends on how the snails are kept and handled. COSRX says its snails are not harmed, but that claim hasn’t been independently verified.

Can snail mucin cause breakouts or allergies?

Anyone can react to a skincare product. The COSRX essence and cream are short, fragrance-free formulas, but if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin, or a known allergy to snails or shellfish, patch test on a small area for a few days first.
