Quick answer: SK-II Facial Treatment Essence is a short, clean formula: 7 ingredients, no fragrance, and more than 90% Pitera according to SK-II. But Pitera’s label name, Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, is also the first ingredient in 8 of the 12 cheaper essences we checked. And the biggest study of SK-II’s products was run by employees of Procter & Gamble, which owns SK-II, with no control group. Our verdict: SK-II is a good essence with a lot of marketing on top. If you want the same lead ingredient for less, Purito Galacto Niacin 97 or Mixsoon Galactomyces Ferment Essence come closest. If you’re choosing between SK-II and Sulwhasoo, SK-II has the simpler, fragrance-free formula.

What’s in SK-II Facial Treatment Essence (Just 7 Ingredients)
Here’s the full ingredient list from SK-II’s product page, in plain English:
| Ingredient | What it does |
|---|---|
| Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate (Pitera) | The star: a liquid made by fermenting yeast. SK-II says it has over 50 micro-nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and amino acids |
| Butylene glycol, pentylene glycol | Humectants that draw in water and help the essence spread and absorb |
| Water | Base |
| Sodium benzoate, methylparaben, sorbic acid | Preservatives that stop germs growing in a water-based product |
That’s it. No fragrance, no essential oils, no denatured alcohol. It’s one of the shortest lists in luxury skincare, which is good news for sensitive skin. The one thing some buyers avoid is methylparaben, a common preservative.
Key Findings: SK-II vs Sulwhasoo vs 12 Cheaper Essences
- 8 of 12 cheaper essences we checked list Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, the ingredient name for SK-II’s Pitera, as their first ingredient.
- 7 of those 8 have no fragrance or essential oils, just like SK-II. The exception, Some By Mi’s vitamin C serum, contains bergamot and lavender oil.
- Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum VI has 50 ingredients. Denatured alcohol is 2nd, fragrance is 15th, and ginseng extract is 39th, after the fragrance allergens limonene and linalool.
- SK-II’s biggest study (86 women, 12 months) was written mostly by Procter & Gamble employees, tested three SK-II products together, and had no placebo or control group.
- Sulwhasoo’s own test of 30 women found hydration up 14.5% after 4 weeks, also with no published control group.
The Data: Ferment Essences Compared
We pulled full ingredient lists for SK-II, Sulwhasoo and 12 popular cheaper essences, then checked where the ferment sits on each list and whether it contains fragrance, essential oils or denatured alcohol. Ingredients are listed from most to least, so the first ingredient is the main one.
| Product | First ingredient | Ingredients | Fragrance / essential oils | Denatured alcohol |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SK-II Facial Treatment Essence | Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate | 7 | None | No |
| Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum VI | Water | 50 | Fragrance + limonene, linalool, citronellol, citral, geraniol | Yes (2nd) |
| Mixsoon Galactomyces Ferment Essence | Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate | 1 to 2 | None | No |
| Purito Galacto Niacin 97 | Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate | 15 | None | No |
| COSRX Galactomyces 95 Tone Balancing Essence | Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate | 12 | None | No |
| Cos De BAHA Galactomyces 94% Essence | Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate | 5 | None | No |
| Elizavecca Milky Piggy Galactomyces 100% | Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate | 1 | None | No |
| Benton Fermentation Essence | Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate | 20 | None | No |
| Then I Met You The Giving Essence | Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate | 41 | None | No |
| Some By Mi Galactomyces Vitamin C Serum | Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate | 64 | Bergamot oil, lavender oil, linalool, limonene | No |
| Missha Time Revolution First Essence 5X | Yeast Ferment Extract | 12 | None | No |
| Neogen Real Ferment Micro Essence | Bifida Ferment Lysate | 49 | None | No |
| Missha Misa Geum Sul First Essence Booster | Ginseng root ferment filtrate | 78 | Fragrance | Yes (5th) |
| Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Essence Water | Panax Ginseng Root Water | 24 | None | No |
One caution on “dupes”: the same ingredient name doesn’t prove an identical ingredient. SK-II calls Pitera “proprietary,” and different yeast strains and fermentation methods can give different results. Most brands also don’t publish how much ferment they use, apart from the percentages in some product names.
Does Pitera Work? What the Research Actually Shows
SK-II’s product page says the essence is “proven to reduce redness” from dryness and promises reduced fine lines in 2 weeks. It gives no study size or method for those claims. So we looked for published research.
- The 12-month study. A 2023 paper in the Journal of Clinical Medicine followed 86 Japanese women who used three SK-II products twice a day for 12 months. The authors report that skin hydration rose and that wrinkles, spots and roughness improved, estimating about 9 “years” of visible aging reversed.
- The catch. Five of the six authors are Procter & Gamble employees, and the sixth is a P&G consultant. There was no placebo or control group, and three products were used together, so the study can’t show what the essence alone does, or whether any good moisturizer would do the same.
- The lab research. A 2022 review describes how galactomyces ferment filtrate affects skin cells in the lab, including filaggrin, a protein linked to the skin barrier. This is cell research, not proof of visible results on faces, and again most authors are tied to P&G.
Our read: galactomyces ferment filtrate is a reasonable hydrating ingredient with some lab support. We found no independent, placebo-controlled trial showing SK-II’s essence beats a cheaper galactomyces essence or a basic moisturizer.
SK-II vs Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum
Sulwhasoo is the Korean luxury brand people compare most with SK-II, but the two products are very different.
| SK-II Facial Treatment Essence | Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum VI | |
|---|---|---|
| Brand origin | Japan (owned by Procter & Gamble) | Korea |
| Texture | Watery essence | Silky serum, used first after cleansing |
| Ingredients | 7 | 50 |
| Star ingredient | Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, 1st | Ginseng extract, 39th (“500-hour aged ginseng” in marketing) |
| Fragrance | None listed | Fragrance plus 5 fragrance allergens |
| Denatured alcohol | No | Yes, 2nd ingredient |
| Company test | No study size given on product page | 30 women, 4 weeks: hydration +14.5%, barrier +9.9%, elasticity +5.9% |
Ingredients are listed from most to least, so ginseng coming after the fragrance and two of its allergens usually means only a small amount. Sulwhasoo’s results come from its own product page: an instrument test on 30 women, plus a home-use survey of 600 women where 92% agreed skin looked clear and bright after 4 weeks. Neither has a published control group.
Who should pick which? If you have sensitive or reactive skin, SK-II’s short, fragrance-free list is the safer bet. If you love a rich herbal scent and a serum texture and your skin tolerates alcohol and fragrance, Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum VI has about 700 reviews and a 4.5-star average. Want ginseng without fragrance or alcohol? Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Essence Water lists ginseng root water first.
SK-II Essence Dupes: Same First Ingredient, Lower Price
- Mixsoon Galactomyces Ferment Essence: the shortest list. INCIDecoder shows galactomyces ferment filtrate (60%) and butylene glycol (40%); the store listing says galactomyces ferment only. No fragrance, no alcohol.
- Purito Galacto Niacin 97: the listing says 92% galactomyces ferment filtrate plus 5% niacinamide, an ingredient often used for uneven tone. About 860 reviews.
- Benton Fermentation Essence: galactomyces first, plus bifida ferment, ceramide NP and panthenol for the skin barrier.
- Missha Time Revolution The First Essence 5X: often called an SK-II dupe, but its first ingredient is a different yeast ferment, not galactomyces. Good on its own; just not the same lead ingredient.
- COSRX Galactomyces 95 and Cos De BAHA Galactomyces 94%: both fragrance-free with galactomyces first, but we couldn’t find the right versions on the largest US online store, so look for them at K-beauty retailers.
Our Picks
SK-II Facial Treatment Essence: the original. A 4.4-star average across about 700 reviews on its listing, sold by SK-II’s own US store. Worth it if you want the exact Pitera formula and the price fits your budget. It also comes in bigger sizes, so compare the price per ounce. Check the current price
Purito Galacto Niacin 97: our best-value pick. Fragrance-free, galactomyces first, plus niacinamide. Check the current price
Mixsoon Galactomyces Ferment Essence: the minimalist pick for very sensitive skin that reacts to long ingredient lists. Check the current price
Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum VI: the Korean luxury pick, best for people who like a scented serum and don’t react to fragrance. Check the current price
How to Use SK-II Facial Treatment Essence
- After cleansing (and toner, if you use one), pour a few drops into your palms and pat it into your face, or use a cotton pad.
- Use it morning and night, then follow with serum and moisturizer. In the morning, finish with sunscreen.
- Patch test first if you have sensitive skin, especially with Sulwhasoo or any product with fragrance.
- Give it 4 weeks before you judge. That’s the timeframe Sulwhasoo uses in its own tests.

How We Did This
- We read SK-II’s and Sulwhasoo’s official US product pages, including full ingredient lists and test claims, on October 17, 2026.
- We pulled ingredient lists for 12 more essences from INCIDecoder and noted the first ingredient, ingredient count, fragrance and essential oils, and denatured alcohol.
- We read the published research on galactomyces ferment filtrate, including the authors’ affiliations and conflict-of-interest statements.
- We checked which products were in stock on the largest US online store and who sells them.
- We did not test these products on our own skin. Formulas change, so check the package before you buy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is SK-II Facial Treatment Essence worth it?
It’s a simple, fragrance-free essence with a 7-ingredient formula, and SK-II says it contains more than 90% Pitera. But Pitera’s label name, Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, is also the first ingredient in several cheaper essences, and the main long-term study of SK-II products was run by the company that owns SK-II, with no control group. If the price is a stretch, a galactomyces essence from a Korean brand gives you the same lead ingredient.
What is Pitera in SK-II?
Pitera is SK-II’s trademarked name for a liquid made by fermenting yeast. On the ingredient label it appears as Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate. SK-II calls it proprietary and says it contains over 50 micro-nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and amino acids.
Is SK-II Korean or Japanese?
SK-II is a Japanese brand owned by Procter & Gamble. It’s often grouped with Korean skincare, but it isn’t K-beauty. Sulwhasoo, its most common rival, is Korean.
What is the best SK-II essence dupe?
For the closest ingredient match, Mixsoon Galactomyces Ferment Essence and Purito Galacto Niacin 97 both list Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate first and contain no fragrance. Purito adds 5% niacinamide. The same ingredient name doesn’t guarantee an identical ferment, since SK-II says its Pitera is proprietary.
Which is better, SK-II or Sulwhasoo?
They do different jobs. SK-II is a watery 7-ingredient essence with no fragrance. Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum VI is a 50-ingredient serum with denatured alcohol second on its list, fragrance, and ginseng extract listed 39th. If you have sensitive skin, SK-II’s short, fragrance-free formula is the safer pick.
Does SK-II essence have fragrance or alcohol?
No fragrance and no denatured alcohol appear in its official 7-ingredient list: Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, butylene glycol, pentylene glycol, water, sodium benzoate, methylparaben and sorbic acid. It does contain a paraben preservative (methylparaben), which some people prefer to avoid.
