What Is Plaid Verification? Codes, Texts and Why Apps Ask (2026)

Reader-supported: we may earn a commission from links on this page.

You’re signing up for a payment app, a loan or an apartment, and a screen pops up: “Verify your bank with Plaid.” Or a text arrives with a Plaid verification code you weren’t expecting. So what is Plaid verification, and should you trust it?

We went through Plaid’s own help center and developer documentation to explain what Plaid checks, why apps use it, what that verification code means, and how to tell a real Plaid message from a scam.

We research, we don’t lab-test. Everything below comes from the official sources listed at the end, checked in October 2026.

In this guide:

The Short Answer

Plaid verification is how an app confirms that a bank account, and sometimes your identity, really belongs to you. It’s legitimate and very common. A Plaid verification code is a one-time code sent while you connect an account. Real texts come from 75243 (PLAID) and real emails from noreply@plaid.com. Never share the code with anyone, and if you didn’t start a connection, don’t click the link.

What Is Plaid Verification?

Plaid sits between apps and banks. Plaid says it connects to more than 12,000 financial institutions, so apps don’t have to build a separate connection to every bank. “Plaid verification” covers a few different checks, and the app decides which one you see:

TypeWhat the app learnsWhat you doHow long
Instant bank verificationYour account and routing numbers belong to youSign in to your bank through Plaid, often on your bank’s own pageSeconds
Database checkThe numbers you typed match an account Plaid has verified beforeType your account and routing numbersFast
Automated micro-depositThe account exists and is yoursSign in; Plaid sends one small deposit and checks it for youUsually 1 to 2 business days
Manual micro-depositThe account exists and is yoursType your account details, then enter the code from a small depositUsually 1 to 2 business days
Identity verificationYou are a real person who matches your IDPhotograph your ID and take a selfieAs little as 10 seconds, Plaid says

Some lenders and landlords also use Plaid to check your income or assets straight from your bank data. Plaid sells that as a separate product.

Why Is an App Asking Me to Verify With Plaid?

Usually for one of three reasons:

  • To move money. Before an app sends or pulls money from your account, it needs proof the account is real and yours. That stops someone from linking a stranger’s bank account.
  • To follow the law. Banks, lenders and many money apps must confirm who their customers are. Plaid lists “know your customer” and anti-money-laundering checks among the main uses of its identity verification.
  • To check income or assets. Lenders and landlords may want to see income or balances, and Plaid lets them read it from your bank instead of asking for paper statements.

One detail matters: for identity checks, Plaid says the app decides what is checked and how your data is used, and Plaid only processes it on the app’s behalf. If an identity check goes wrong, contact the app, not Plaid.

What Is a Plaid Verification Code?

According to Plaid’s help center, Plaid texts or emails you when you’ve started connecting an account to an app and still need to finish a step. The message may contain a link or a one-time code. Here’s how to tell if it’s real:

  • You expected it. Only act on a Plaid message if you just started connecting an account.
  • The sender matches. Plaid texts come from 75243 (PLAID). Plaid emails come from noreply@plaid.com.
  • The link matches. Official Plaid links start with my.plaid.com, secure.plaid.com or verify.plaid.com.
  • Nobody asks you for the code. Plaid says it will never ask for your one-time code by phone, text or email.

Got a Plaid code you didn’t ask for?

Plaid says an unexpected code can mean another customer mistyped their phone number, or that someone tried to use your banking information without permission. Don’t click the link. Then:

  1. Check the bank or app named in the message for logins, transfers or transactions you don’t recognize. Call the bank directly if something looks wrong.
  2. Secure your email: review recent security alerts and remove devices you don’t recognize.
  3. Change the passwords for that bank, your financial apps, your email and any account that shares the same password.
  4. If the messages keep coming, contact Plaid through its help center and choose the “unexpected message” option.

The classic scam goes like this: someone calls or texts, claims to be from your bank or “Plaid support,” and asks you to read back the code you just received. That code is the key to your account. Hang up. We cover more tricks like this in our guide to AI scams and how to spot them.

Is Plaid Verification Safe?

Plaid is a large, legitimate company, and it says it uses encryption, strong authentication and third-party audits, and doesn’t sell or rent your personal information. The bigger question is what data the app gets once you connect. We dug into that, and Plaid’s privacy policy, in our full investigation: Is Plaid safe?

A few habits make verification safer:

  • Use your bank’s own sign-in page when Plaid sends you there, rather than typing your bank password into another screen.
  • Skip the login if you prefer. If the app offers “enter account details manually,” you can verify with your routing and account numbers and a small deposit instead. Plaid’s docs say that takes one to two business days.
  • Read the consent screen. It lists what the app wants, such as balances, transactions or identity details.
  • Clean up later. You can see and remove the apps you’ve connected in Plaid Portal at my.plaid.com.

What If Plaid Verification Fails?

  • Your bank isn’t listed or won’t connect. Look for a manual option (“enter account details” or micro-deposits) in the app.
  • You can’t find the micro-deposit. It can take one to two business days. In manual verification, Plaid says the deposit description includes a three-letter code you type back into the app.
  • You entered the wrong code. Be careful: Plaid’s docs say three wrong attempts lock that verification, and you’ll need to start again in the app.
  • Your ID or selfie check failed. Contact the app. It sets the rules for identity checks and can tell you what went wrong.

Our Verdict

Plaid verification is a normal, legitimate step that most money apps now use. Treat it like any other sign-in: start it yourself, check that messages come from 75243 or noreply@plaid.com, and never read a Plaid code to anyone. If you’d rather not share your bank login, look for the manual micro-deposit option and accept the short wait.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Plaid verification?

It’s how an app uses Plaid to confirm that a bank account belongs to you, and sometimes to confirm your identity with a photo of your ID and a selfie. Banking, payment, lending and rental apps use it before they move money or open an account for you.

What is a Plaid verification code?

It’s a one-time code Plaid sends by text or email so you can continue connecting a bank account to an app. Real texts come from 75243 (PLAID) and real emails from noreply@plaid.com. Never share the code with anyone. Plaid says it will never ask you for it.

Why did I get a Plaid code I didn’t ask for?

Plaid says it can mean someone mistyped their phone number, or that someone tried to use your banking information. Don’t click the link. Check your bank accounts for activity you don’t recognize, secure your email, and change your passwords if anything looks wrong.

Is a text from 75243 really from Plaid?

Plaid says its texts come from 75243 (PLAID) and its links start with my.plaid.com, secure.plaid.com or verify.plaid.com. Even so, only act on a message if you just started connecting an account. If you didn’t, go back to the app directly instead of using the link.

Do I have to give an app my bank login to use Plaid?

Not always. Many apps let you enter your routing and account numbers instead. Plaid then sends a small deposit with a code that you type back into the app. It takes one to two business days, but you never share your bank login.

How long does Plaid verification take?

Logging in through your bank takes seconds. Micro-deposit verification usually takes one to two business days. Plaid says its identity verification can take as little as 10 seconds.
