Quick answer: the Roblox lawsuit is really three groups of cases. 10 states and Los Angeles County are suing Roblox over child safety, according to Roblox’s own July 2026 filing with the SEC. At least 6 states have settled for payments and required safety changes. And families’ cases about children groomed and exploited through Roblox are combined in a federal case called MDL 3166 in San Francisco. The settlement money so far goes to states, not families. And no, Roblox is not getting shut down.

Key Findings
- 10 states plus LA County have sued: Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.
- 6 states have settled: Alabama, Mississippi, Nevada, South Dakota, West Virginia and Kansas.
- $91 million: what Roblox set aside for settlements in the first half of 2026, according to its filing.
- 31 cases in 12 districts were in the federal case when it was created in December 2025, with 48 more related cases flagged to the court.
- No family payout yet. State settlements pay states, and the families’ federal case is still ongoing.
What the States and Families Allege
According to the federal court’s transfer order, families say their children “were sexually exploited and, in some cases, assaulted by child predators who targeted and groomed them” through Roblox. They say predators then moved the children to a second platform, such as Discord, Snapchat or Instagram.
- The families’ claims: fraudulent and negligent misrepresentation, negligence, failure to warn, and design defect. Discord, Snap and Meta are also named in some cases.
- The states’ claims: Roblox’s SEC filing says the state cases relate mainly to “youth-related consumer protection and digital safety.” Texas, for example, says Roblox “failed to adequately protect children on the Platform.”
- Roblox’s position: the company says it “intends to defend itself vigorously in all such matters.”
Roblox Settlements So Far
| State | Amount | Key terms |
|---|---|---|
| West Virginia (Apr 2026) | $11.08 million over several years | Age checks before chat; adults can’t message under-16s except verified trusted friends; safe-content defaults for under-16s |
| Alabama (Apr 2026) | $12.2 million | Funds go toward school resource officers |
| Nevada (Apr 2026) | $12.5 million (as reported) | Part of the April settlements |
| Mississippi (Jun 2026) | $9 million for digital literacy, plus $5 million if Roblox breaks the terms | Blocking adult contact with kids, age verification, parental consent, no nighttime notifications |
| South Dakota | Not disclosed in Roblox’s filing | Listed as settled as of July 30, 2026 |
| Kansas (Sep 2026) | $9.8 million over 3 years, plus a $500,000 awareness campaign | $10 million penalty if Roblox breaks the terms |
Where the money goes: to the states, for things like safety education and public awareness campaigns. West Virginia’s attorney general said Roblox will now “verify who its users are, limit who can contact children, and block inappropriate content by default.”
The Federal Case (MDL 3166), Explained
An MDL (multidistrict litigation) is a way for federal courts to handle many similar lawsuits together. It isn’t a class action: each family keeps its own case, but evidence-gathering and pretrial rulings happen once, in one court.
- Name: In re: Roblox Corporation Child Sexual Exploitation and Assault Litigation, MDL No. 3166.
- Court: the Northern District of California, before Chief Judge Richard Seeborg.
- Created: December 12, 2025, with 31 actions in 12 districts and 48 related actions noticed.
- Key questions the court listed: how much Roblox knew about predators using its platform, whether it said Roblox was safe when it wasn’t, and whether it could have built better parental controls and age verification.
- Defendants’ view: Roblox, Discord, Snap and Meta all opposed combining the cases.
Is Roblox Getting Shut Down?
No. “Is Roblox getting shut down?” is searched about 5,400 times a month, but nothing in these cases points that way. The state lawsuits seek penalties and court-ordered changes, according to Roblox’s filing, and the settlements so far required safety changes and payments. Roblox is still running and added new age-based accounts worldwide in June 2026.
What Roblox Changed
Many of the settlement terms match changes Roblox has rolled out. According to Roblox’s June 2026 announcement, users are now placed in Roblox Kids (5 to 8) or Roblox Select (9 to 15) accounts, and nobody can chat without an age check. We explain every setting in our Roblox parental controls guide.
What Parents Can Do Now
- Link a parent account and check your child’s birthday is right. It decides which account type and games they get.
- Keep chat off for younger kids, and approve each Trusted Friend for older ones.
- Talk about the main risk the lawsuits describe: strangers who move children to other apps like Discord or Snapchat.
- Lock down the other apps too: see Instagram parental controls and the best parental control apps.
- Worried your child was harmed? Report it to Roblox and local police, and contact the NCMEC CyberTipline. For legal options, speak to a licensed attorney.

How We Did This
- We read Roblox’s quarterly report filed with the SEC on July 30, 2026, and the federal court’s MDL 3166 transfer order filed December 12, 2025.
- We read state announcements and news reports on each settlement, and noted where a figure comes from news coverage rather than the state.
- This is not legal advice. Cases are ongoing, so details can change.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Roblox being sued?
States and families say Roblox didn’t do enough to protect children from predators who contacted them on the platform, often moving them to apps like Discord or Snapchat. They also say Roblox misrepresented how safe it is. Roblox denies wrongdoing and says it is defending itself.
Is Roblox getting shut down?
No. None of the US cases has ordered Roblox shut down, and the settlements so far require safety changes and payments, not a shutdown. Roblox is still operating and has added age checks and new kids’ accounts.
Is there a Roblox class action settlement for families?
Not for the child safety cases, as of October 2026. The state settlements pay money to the states, not to individual families. The families’ injury cases are combined in a federal case, MDL 3166, which is still ongoing.
Can I join the Roblox lawsuit?
The federal case is made up of individual lawsuits filed by families, not one class action you sign up for. If you believe your child was harmed, speak with a licensed attorney in your state. This article isn’t legal advice.
