Quick answer: The safest non-toxic cookware has no coating at all: cast iron, carbon steel or stainless steel. If you want nonstick, pick a ceramic pan whose label says PFAS-free or PTFE-free, not just “PFOA-free.” We checked the 25 best-selling skillets on October 17, 2026: 10 had no coating, 8 used ceramic or titanium coatings, and 7 were nonstick pans that never said they were PTFE-free. Our top nonstick pick is the GreenPan Valencia Pro set, and the best uncoated pan is the Lodge cast iron skillet.

The Data: What Each Listing Claims
We went through the top of the Skillets best-seller list at the largest US online store and recorded what each listing says about its cooking surface. We left out three items that weren’t skillets (two saucepans and a 17-piece set).

“Coating not named” means the listing calls the pan nonstick but never says what the coating is made of, or whether it’s PTFE. That doesn’t prove a pan contains PTFE. It means a shopper can’t tell from the listing.
PFOA-Free vs PTFE-Free vs PFAS-Free
| Label | What it means | Good sign? |
|---|---|---|
| PFOA-free | One older chemical isn’t used. PFOA was phased out of US manufacturing years ago. | Weak. The pan can still have a PTFE coating. |
| PTFE-free | No Teflon-type coating. | Good |
| PFAS-free / made without PFAS | No chemicals from the whole PFAS family, including PTFE. | Best |
| Non-toxic | No legal definition. It’s a marketing word. | Check for one of the labels above |
| Granite, stone, titanium, diamond | Usually the look or a reinforcement, not the coating itself. | Check for one of the labels above |
This matters because “PFOA-free” was sold as a safety claim for years. In 2020, the Ecology Center tested 24 nonstick products and found PTFE on 79% of the cooking pans, many of them marketed as PFOA-free, according to E&E News. The same report said products marketed as PTFE-free appeared to be free of PFAS.
Is Regular Nonstick Cookware Safe?
Regulators don’t agree yet, so here’s where each one stands:
- The FDA still authorizes PTFE nonstick coatings. On its PFAS food contact page, it says the manufacturing process “vaporizes off virtually all the smaller” PFAS molecules and that “studies show negligible amounts” migrate to food. It flags only grease-proof paper packaging as a possible dietary concern.
- Minnesota defines PFAS as chemicals with “at least one fully fluorinated carbon atom,” which includes PTFE. Since January 1, 2025, its law bans selling cookware that contains intentionally added PFAS in the state.
- The bigger worry for many experts is how PFAS are made and disposed of. E&E News reported that consumers are unlikely to face dangerous exposure from cookware, while factory workers and nearby communities face more risk.
Our take: if your nonstick pan is in good shape, you don’t need to panic. When it’s scratched or worn and it’s time to replace it, choose uncoated or PFAS-free.

How to Read a Cookware Label in 30 Seconds
- Look for “PFAS-free” or “PTFE-free.” If you only see “PFOA-free,” treat the coating as unknown.
- Ignore “non-toxic,” “granite” and “stone” on their own. They aren’t safety standards.
- Read the bullet points, not just the title. Some brands say what the coating is only further down the listing.
- When in doubt, go uncoated. Cast iron, carbon steel and stainless steel have no coating to worry about.

How We Did This
- On October 17, 2026, we recorded the top 28 products on the Skillets best-seller list at the largest US online store, with a New York delivery address. We left out 3 that weren’t skillets, leaving 25.
- For each pan, we read the title, bullet points and product details, and recorded the surface type and any claim about PFAS, PTFE or PFOA.
- We did not lab-test any pan. These are the sellers’ own claims, and best-seller rankings change daily.
- For the rules, we used the FDA’s PFAS food contact page (current as of January 3, 2025) and Minnesota Statutes section 116.943.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the safest non-toxic cookware?
Cookware with no coating at all: cast iron, carbon steel and stainless steel. In our check, 10 of the 25 best-selling skillets were uncoated. If you want nonstick, choose a ceramic pan whose listing says PFAS-free or PTFE-free, not just PFOA-free.
Is PFOA-free cookware safe?
“PFOA-free” only means one chemical isn’t used. PFOA was phased out of US manufacturing years ago, so the label tells you little. A PFOA-free pan can still have a PTFE (Teflon-type) coating, which counts as a PFAS under laws like Minnesota’s.
Is ceramic cookware non-toxic?
Ceramic nonstick coatings are made without PTFE, and the ceramic pans in our check that made a claim said PFAS-free or PTFE-free. In a 2020 test reported by E&E News, the pans marketed as PTFE-free appeared free of PFAS. Use ceramic at the heat the maker recommends.
Is Teflon a PFAS?
Teflon is a brand of PTFE. PTFE contains fully fluorinated carbon atoms, so it meets Minnesota’s legal definition of PFAS, and Minnesota has banned the sale of cookware with intentionally added PFAS since January 1, 2025. The FDA still authorizes PTFE coatings and says only negligible amounts migrate to food.
What does granite or titanium nonstick mean?
Usually it describes the look or a reinforcement in the coating, not what the coating is made of. In our check, the granite and titanium-reinforced nonstick pans that didn’t say PFAS-free or PTFE-free gave no other detail about the coating chemistry.
Is stainless steel cookware non-toxic?
Stainless steel has no coating, so there’s no PFAS to worry about. The trade-off is that food sticks more, so preheat the pan and use a little oil.
